Hi just an intro to me and my first MX machine. I'd hoped to start riding with the club early last year but other commitments etc.... This years plan is to start in June on my garden shed hybrid (z250 with KX attachments), see how I take to it and move into PRE 65 Any advice welcome on the machine or getting started. The biggest prob at the moments is finding a decent replacement ignition for the points system on the Z engine.

Wasn't the K250 a road going twin cylinder job? I guess you are going to use a KX frame. What year is the frame?
What makes you fancy going down the pre '65 route?

The picture I posted hasn't appeared so will work on that one. The frame and twin motor are from an 81 Z250, I'v grafted on the complete front and rear end of a drum braked KX250, 80/81ish vintage I suspect.
As for Pre 65........just like the noise of big twins (Its a mid life thing!) and don't fancy 2 strokes again

[glow=red,2,300]I suspect the KX frame is pre '79 as the '79 had an alley swinging arm brake hub on the left.[/glow]As for Pre 65........just like the noise of big twins (Its a mid life thing!) and don't fancy 2 strokes again I get where your coming from, wouldn't want to race (in the loosest form of the word) one though ;D

Ahaa! the plot thickens for my creation (manic laugh from the shed)
Anyhoo I'll keep the tread running with updates on my progress and and problems the forum can help me with. I'v got plenty of race experience on the track but, apart from a disaster of a year on a Gas Gas 350, non off road. I am assuming of course that I can race this thing with DSC?....don't care about class, just see how I get on and have some fun too boot.
When and how is it best to join the DSC club........do I need an ACU licence??

We are an AMCA affiliated club. You could buy a classic AMCA licence but if you are only intending to do our three events or less you can race on a day licence issued by the club.
We have no problem with specials in Twinshocks as long as they fit the usual criteria: two rear shock, drum brakes and air cooled. There are one or two exceptions to the rule.

Still scratchin my head over an ignition for the Z engine: The stock engine runs points from the cam, don't fancy keeping them so need an alternative. DYNA etc don't do a trigger replacement.......the cheapest solution seems to be bolting on the CDI ignition from the later GPZ250/305 but would prefer a self generating unit with a single twin spark coil (180 deg). any ideas yet? Just to thicken the mix......fly wheel or not? I used to run a Motoplat on RD motors on the track which gave a free revving engine but couldn't pull the skin off a chipolata out of turns or up hill (Cadwell). I presume off road motors favour a high crank mass??? I'm more garden shed than slide rule engineering but feel free to blind me with science on this one!
