Really enjoyed the trial at Penselwood, now want to buy a trials bike but haven't a clue what to look for back in the 70,s only rode two strokes (Dot, Montessa, Bultaco) now would prefer a four stroke. Limited budget say £1200 ish. Looked on e bay (as you do Would welcome any advice or, if anyone knows of a bike for sale would you drop me a line, cheers, Bun e-mail neuromech1@btinternet

I'd have thought you'd had enough of four bangers!
Personally I'd go for a Honda TLR 200 (says he who has three 2 smokes in various states of disrepair) lovely little bit of kit relatively easy to rider, or a TLR 250 at a push. I suspected it will be difficult to find one that doesn't require a lot of work for your budget.

Hi Bun If its got to be a four-plonker and 70's then you're limited to the Honda TL125 , which can be opened out to 200cc later on , there is one on ebay for your kinda money .... However , if you where to stick with 2 strokes .... skys the limit ... for that money I would look at the Yamaha TY175 or 250 , Montessa, Bultaco , Fanta , Ossa etc etc ..... I've a Sammy Miller Bultaco and looking to have some fun on it , as n when the scramble season is done and dusted ! All best Greg R [ www.vapourblasting.com ]

For fun & easy to play with .....200 honda as whizzy said ,,,usualy if you manage to find a rough one its only cosmetic,,,,,with a few tweeks ,,,, unless of course your realy unlucky,,,,,,250 is a different animal,,,,,,,can be a right pain in the arse to sort & ride unless your an expert ,,,,,but thats only my opinion says the bloke thats bin there done that & is now building a 200 montesa smoker for himself,,,,,,,,,,,, .

Hello Bun, glad to see you are thinking of having a go. There is a big choice of bikes on the internet auction sites, but beware because they are mostly "immaculate, hardly used, fully rebuilt, new stickers & grips" type, although there are a few genuine good buys. Some people, including myself, have been seriously misled by some owners/sellers/backstreet dealers descriptions of the bike they have for sale. Much better to ask/look around locally & get a bike of known history, but before you buy, try to have a ride on various models to identify which one would be best for YOU. Go to a few local club trials, have a good look around at what is being used & ask other riders opinions. Get my contact details from Whizzy & ring me for a chat & discuss your options if you want. Cheers for now

Many thanks guys for all the advice, it is really appreciated. Looks like the TLR200 is the favorite but will set me back a few more pennies ! If i do go for a 2 stroke then I think it will be a TY175, back in the 70's one of my best mates had a brand new one which I got to ride from time to time so would it bring back great memories
